Improving the financial standing of Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation system is the aim of reform legislation expected to be under debate this week by the House of Representatives in Harrisburg. The state’s unemployment benefit system now owes over $3 billion to the federal government for benefits already paid to workers during the recent economic downturn. Bill sponsor Rep. Legislation to bring lawsuit abuse reforms to Pennsylvania’s courts similar to those already in place in 40 other states was approved Monday by the Pennsylvania House. House Bill 1, known as the Fair Share Act, would ensure the responsibility for damages in civil lawsuits are assigned in an equitable manner. Rep. Castle Doctrine legislation, which would allow Pennsylvania Citizens to use lethal force to protect themselves or their family members, has been approved by the House Judiciary Committee in Harrisburg.
